How
From 3D design to the bench, all in the city

Not a catalogue. A jeweller's bench in the centre of Bologna.

SANZO is the atelier of Matteo Sanzo. Every jewel begins with a meeting: we listen to the idea, build it in 3D, print it to try on the finger, then cast, set and finish it. The entire chain is in Bologna.

The starting point can be a drawing, a photograph, a family stone or simply an intention. If the design does not exist yet, we propose one.

From the bench

A few pieces made in the atelier. Every jewel is one of a kind: these creations show a way of working, not a price list.

How a bespoke jewel is made

  1. Listening

Bring an idea, a sketch, a picture, a stone. We talk about how you will wear it, the budget and the timing. If you do not have a design yet, we prepare a proposal.

  2. 3D design

We build the jewel in every detail and show you realistic renders: shapes, proportions, settings. Everything can still change, before any metal is touched.

  3. Prototype

For designs that call for it we print a resin model to try on the finger: size and proportions are judged in real life, not on a screen.

  4. Making

Casting, stone setting and finishing at the bench. Only when every detail is settled does the design become a jewel.

The process in detail

Diamonds chosen to your specification

We do not start from what is in the safe but from what you are looking for: carat, colour, clarity, cut and budget. We source the stone, look at it together under the loupe and set it in the design. The same goes for sapphires, emeralds and rubies.

Carat
The weight of the stone. With the same cut, two diamonds of equal weight can look very different.
Colour
From D, colourless, to Z. In a white gold mount the differences between the top grades are almost invisible.
Clarity
Natural inclusions, graded at ten times magnification. What matters is what the naked eye can see.
Cut
Proportions and symmetry: this is what makes a diamond sparkle, and the C not to economise on.

On request, diamonds come with a certificate from an independent gemmological laboratory.

The atelier and its services

What clients say

  • He listened to our requests and gave us sincere, accommodating advice, allowing us to create truly unusual wedding bands for our big day. The attention to detail […] was very much appreciated, as was the value for money.

    Greta, September 2026

  • Instead he chose to give us the perfect wedding band, suggesting we enclose our engagement ring between two simple gold bands. A lifelong memory that became a promise of a future as a family.
